Safety & scam protection
Rental scams are the most common fraud in Cayman classifieds. CayMarket is built to make them hard, here's how the protection works, and how to spot the tricks that still get people.
How CayMarket protects you
Every new listing is scored the moment it's posted, scam keywords, pulls to off-platform contact, prices far under market, brand-new accounts posting high-value ads. Suspicious listings are held for human review before anyone sees them.
Every uploaded photo gets a visual fingerprint. Near-identical images appearing across different listings, the classic stolen-photo scam, are flagged for review.
Asking prices are compared against live medians from active listings in the same category and district. Too-good-to-be-true pricing raises a listing's risk score.
Hard caps on posting, messaging and new accounts stop the mass-posting runs scammers rely on.
Landlords with the ✓ badge have been identity-checked. Filter to verified-only with one tap.
Incoming messages that mention wire transfers, gift cards, crypto or deposits-before-viewing get an automatic warning right in the conversation, and every rental chat carries a standing reminder: never pay before you've viewed in person.
Report a suspicious listing from its page. Three independent reports hide it automatically until a human reviews it.
Listings carry salted one-way hashes of technical posting data, never your raw IP address, so repeat fraud can be linked and investigated.
No system catches everything, VPNs and new tactics exist, screening runs when a listing is posted rather than retroactively, and photo fingerprints can miss heavily edited images. The golden rules below are your best protection.
The golden rules
- 1. Never pay anything before viewing the property in person. No deposit, no “holding fee”, no first month.
- 2. Never wire money, no Western Union, MoneyGram, gift cards, or crypto. Ever.
- 3. Meet the landlord at the property. They should have keys and be able to show you around.
- 4. Keep chat in the app until you've met. A paper trail protects you.
- 5. Get a written lease before money changes hands, and a receipt for every payment.
Scams to recognise
The overseas landlord
“I'm abroad, wire the deposit and my agent will post you the keys.”
The property is usually real but stolen from another listing. There are no keys. Never pay anyone you haven't met at the actual property.
The too-good price
A Seven Mile 2-bed at half market rent, available immediately, landlord very responsive.
Scammers price 40-60% under market to create urgency. Check similar listings here, if it's dramatically cheaper, assume it's bait.
The pressure deposit
“Three other people want it, send CI$500 today to hold it.”
No legitimate Cayman landlord takes holding fees by wire/Western Union/crypto before a viewing. Walk away.
The off-platform pull
“Let's continue on WhatsApp / email, it's easier.”
Moving off-platform kills the paper trail. Keep the conversation in CayMarket chat until you've viewed the property in person.
The fake listing clone
Photos look professional; the same photos appear on other sites under different names.
Reverse-search suspicious photos. Report clones here, three independent reports hide a listing automatically.
Seen something suspicious?
Open the listing and tap Report this listing. Three independent reports hide a listing automatically pending review. You'll be protecting the whole island.
